Their Spirits

Title: Their Spirits
Pre – Abby/Connor
Abby reminds Connor that even though Cutter and Stephen are dead, they are still with them, even as they wait in the Cretaceous…
I don’t own anybody!
Wow, I didn’t write any Primeval slash! I am quite astonished, but this fic-idea has been nagging at me ever since I watched the last episode of season 3 and first episode of season 4.

"This would be so much easier if Professor Cutter and Stephen were here," Connor whined, gritting his teeth as tiny sparks flew off the two rocks he was effortlessly trying to rub together. "Or Danny, for that matter," He added as the grass and twigs Abby and himself had collected finally burst into a bright orange flame.

"There we go!" Connor shouted cheekily, looking at Abby for approval and earning a small smile from the blonde.

"Good job," Abby replied, gently nudging her friend with her shoulder. Connor let another cheeky smile grace his face as Abby began rummaging through their packs.

"Dammit!" She cursed, pulling out a knife, blanket, two bottles of water, and two sandwiches, plus other, somewhat, useful tools.

"Abby?" Connor asked, inching closer to her.

"Becker only prepared two sandwiches for us. Two!"

"Well, he probably didn't expect us to get stranded in the Cretaceous," Connor said softly. "Besides these'll be the best things before we have to go 'hunt and gather'."

Abby smiled at Connor’s dorky-ness and passed one of the sandwiches to him.

"Bon appetite!" Connor said cheerful, as he unwrapped the saran-rap and began his feast.

Abby unwrapped her own sandwich and took only a few bites. Completely done with his own sandwich, Connor glanced up and noticed Abby's intense staring at the fire...

"Something wrong with the fire?" Connor asked softly, startling the blonde out of her staring.

"What? Oh, no. I was just thinking about what you said earlier, Connor," Abby said, taking another bite from her sandwich.

Connor rolled his eyes. "I say plenty of things, Abby. What did I say this time?"

"When you were lighting the fire and you were talking about wishing Cutter and Stephen were still with us," Abby whispered, her gaze dropped from Connor's face to the glowing fire as dusk started to fall in.

"They are..."

"They are what?"

"They are still with us Connor," Abby continued to whispered, she balled up her sandwich wrapping and tossed it carelessly aside.

"Um, no. They died, remember?" Connor countered.

"I know they died, but I believe their spirits are still here with us," Abby moved from her spot across the fire to sitting next to Connor. The two stared quietly at the fire before Abby continued, "If you concentrate you can almost feel them with us..."

She placed her hand on Connor's knee and rested her head on his shoulder. Connor instinctually leaned his own head down against hers and whispered, "I'll keep first watch, yeah..."

Abby didn't respond and Connor grabbed a long branch from the ground next to him and poked at the fire. Abby's words thundered around his skull, and Connor closed his eyes briefly, taking a long breath of air, before opening them again.

In the spot where Abby had moved were two ghostly figures - Professor Cutter and Stephen!

Connor's eyes doubled and he blinked in doubt. The figures disappeared as quickly as he blinked but Connor was sure that they had been there, and were still there, just like Abby had mentioned.

They were still with them...

"I know you're there," Connor whispered out loud to no-one, as he poked at the fire again. "So please, keep us safe until we can go home..."

A distant roar shouted out, but Connor barely acknowledged it as he felt Abby cuddle closer to him...

Please leave anything!

awww. Although I kind of have this mental image like at the end of Return of the Jedi now, with the ghosts of Obi Wan and Yoda and Anakin watching over Luke and the gang. I suspect Connor would approve...
